Pat and family, Rose and I are so sorry to hear of the passing of Alvin, and we pray you find peace in the many loving memories you have shared with with him over the past 5 decades.
Alvin was very passionate in whatever cause he set his mind to, and I recall back in the 80's when as union activists at Canpar Transport, we traveled throughout southern Ontario to educate our fellow workers about their rights to a safe work environment, we accomplished a lot of positive changes that are still in effect to this day.
Visiting your home in Bothwell with my young family over 30 years ago and the tour you gave us of the surrounding area was truly a treat and we speak fondly of those memories to this day.
Alvin was a great man and he will be missed.

Alvin was my best friend during our formative teenage years in Orchard Heights (Chatham). I loved to invent board games and Alvin was always my cheerful "test pilot". We played softball all summer and road hockey all winter, safe in our little enclave. I went away to university and saw Alvin on my occasional visits home nd in the summers. But my parents split up and moved away and I simply lost contact with my good friend. Little did I realize but it would be 55 years later before Alvin phoned out of the blue, and we took up our conversation as if we had not finished it. Alvin soon visited our home and stayed for supper. After that we met monthly at Tim Horton's nearby, where Alvin continued regaling me with stories about his life and loving family. A friend of my youth and a wonderful friend of my age, I shall miss him terribly. My deepest condolences to Pat and his children grandchildren and great grandchild.

I will always remember The Times that we were able to spend with Alvin, Pat and boys. I feel incredibly blessed to be considered one of those honorary children As Alvin and my dad were best friends from childhood. He was always an honourable man Who is always there for us kids after our parents passed! Alvin always had an ear no matter what time of day or night. He was always there to offer advice and if we took it that was our choice but he was always A man Who always stood behind what he said and he didn't beat around the Bush. I will always be incredibly thankful I will never forget the day when I posted my wedding picture on my Facebook and he said what a beautiful daughter. I will miss you so much Alvin and I could just imagine the party that you are my father are having up in heaven as I know dad would be there at the gate waiting for you... Until we meet again Alvin... Please give my mom and dad a hug

Tears and Prayers for you Pat and family. The Fleming sisters, Ann & Margy & Leslee grew up with the Gehl boys in Chatham, especially Alvin and Harold. A sad day for our family. Alvin saved my Dad's Air Force jacket that he used as a fishing jacket - then gave it to Ann. There was no saving the jacket but Ann cut all the buttons off and had a Master Silversmith make a Sterling Silver ring encasing one of the buttons for her nephew David - Margy's son, who was very close to the sisters' father, Howard. Alvin got to see the finished ring. Thanks Alvin.

Aunt Pat and entire Gehl family and relatives. So sad to hear of Uncle Alvin's passing. He will be missed by so many. To me he was a man who bestowed so many great memories. He always had a great story to tell. Either about some hidden treasure he owned or to new ones he would seek out with his new magnet.
He was a man who would give you the shirt off his back, stop what he was doing to help another, no questions asked and be the first to listen to your problems. He will always be remembered and never forgotten. Peter King
