Obituary of Joan Mary Jackman

Joan Mary Jackman, a long-time resident in the Thamesville area, died at the age of 97 on the 28th of August, 2014 at Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg, Ontario, following a short illness. She was born on March 27th, 1917 in New Malden, England to William Aylott (a member of the Black Watch, deceased during WW1, 3 weeks after her birth) and Gertrude Olive (Staines) Aylott. Sister to Barbara (deceased) and half sister to Ena (deceased) and Sheila (living in England). Joan came to Canada as a ten year old in 1927 and lived with her Aunt and Uncle on a farm in the Morpeth area. She was known as self-reliant, courageous and kindly person. Joan married Edward Clifford Jackman in 1946 in Thamesville. Following the death of her husband in 1965, she worked at John McGregor Secondary School in Chatham for 17 years. Joan was an avid golfer through her 95th year, and was a long-time member of Maple City Country Club, where she is renowned for having made two holes-in-one in her eighties. She was a strong supporter of St. Stephen's Anglican Church in Thamesville. Joan always loved music, particularly vocal music, and sang in the church choir for many years. Her faith was foundational to her life and upheld her to the end. Joan is survived by her only child Thomas and his wife Jennifer (of Castleton, Ontario), her grandson, Clifford, his wife Cathy and great-grandson Anthony (of Guelph, Ontario), and her granddaughter Jessica and her husband William (of Toronto, Ontario). She is also remembered by her numerous nieces and nephews and their children. The Jackman family will receive friends at the John C. Badder Funeral Home, 72 Victoria Street, Thamesville on Monday from 2-4 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Thamesville with Rev. William Craven officiating. Interment in Sherman Cemetery, Thamesville.
