Very fond memories of Ken at University. He was on my floor in Johnston Hall and at that time drank Molson 50 as no one was ever brave enough to drink it. His passion for farming was clear and when his circumstances changed suddenly he seamlessly transitioned into a career where he could still make a difference. I was fortunate enough to visit him a couple times at the school and catch up. He was a great individual and the agriculture community will surely miss his dedication and contributions. My deepest condolences to the family.

Fate smiled upon me the day that you became my brother-in-law. From the very beginning, I felt “at home” in your presence…. and I knew in my heart, that the two of us would grow closer through the years. Now, as I look back in time, I am reminded of just how much we have shared, and I am grateful that I was blessed with a brother-in-law whose warmth, thoughtfulness and sense of compassion, sewed to make my days brighter, my sorrows more bearable and my life richer in so many ways. For this…….I feel fortunate beyond measure.
I will miss cooking for you and listening to your praises how delicious it was ( even if it wasn’t ). I’ll miss planning my menu when I knew you’d be coming. You never needed much to make you happy and you loved feeling special even if it was a small gesture. I miss our laughs, we have shared many.
I love you.
Till we meet again ❤️

Ken was an unsung hero for agriculture, with his tireless and constant contributions, calculations and advice to so many research projects and so many budding researchers. He epitomized what it was to be a truly great person: kind, humble, gentle, encouraging, intelligent. All of agriculture will miss his impact. I am so sorry for your loss.

I was so sad to learn of your passing. You were an inspiration to all of us here in Plant Agriculture. You loved agriculture and you contributed every day with your scientific knowledge in an effort to enhance graduate student training and the transfer of new knowledge to Ontario farmers. On Behalf of The Ontario Agricultural College we offer our deepest condolences to the Family of Ken Janovicek. Ken was well loved and valued by staff, faculty and students across OAC, but especially in the Plant Agriculture Department where he worked for many many years. He was a great departmental citizen, showing up at Departmental events and participating fully. He was also a great source of information and insight for students, especially graduate students, with his tremendous knowledge of and experience in field cropping systems research. He impacted many lives through his work and his friendships in OAC and he will be deeply missed.

I had the pleasure of working with Ken at the university of Guelph. He was such an inspiration to us all. Never complained and always very independent. Never let the fact that he lost his sight get him down. I admired him and how he walked around campus with his cane. Rest In Peace Ken. You will be missed by all who had the opportunity to know him.

In January, I moved back to Ontario from Boston. The Smordins and Ken welcomed me into their home as I navigated what my next steps were. Ken was even generous enough to let me stay in his place during his stays at the hospital. Ken also spent a lot of time at the house and it was then I got the chance to really know Ken.
Ken has always been a part of the Smordin family. As a cousin of the Smordins, he's my family too. But I hadn't seen him in ages. As I got older, I didn't visit Guelph as much. Living with Ken, now as an adult myself, was very special. I learned quickly that he was a great listener and conversationalist. He had an open mind and didn't mind my many rants. I enjoyed telling him about my worries, woes and prospects. He was always encouraging and thoughtful. He encouraged me to believe in myself as I tried to build my self-confidence and figure out a place to work and live. He wanted to be the first one to hear from me after my job interviews and was so excited when I found a good job in Toronto.
We spent a lot of time together during the first few months of 2023. I have a lot of great memories with Ken from that time. I loved taking Ken to Zehrs. He always treated me to a donut. He really loves the Zehrs donuts.
I'm so glad I had Ken around during such a vulnerable time in my life. Ken, of course, was fighting his own battle. A much bigger hurdle than mine. But he was always there for me still. He really cared about me and his loved ones. He was the best housemate I ever had. Easy going, kind and understanding. A great friend.
On Friday, June 18th, we talked on the phone. I told him about how my new job is going and that I received an exciting second job offer. I updated him on all the happenings in my life and reflected on how far I've come since January. I told him I'd visit him the following weekend and that I'm excited for him to get back home and rest. He was so proud of me. I miss him so much.

Sincere condolences to the entire Janovicek family. It must be painful and difficult to process, and Ken will be greatly missed by family, friends, and colleagues. I count myself fortunate to have known him for about 35 years; it was one of the ways that God blessed me. Ken also accepted that he was in God's hands even when the going was very tough. Ken was kind, generous and unassuming. He was also very intelligent, and his life's work was a great contribution to Ontario agriculture (even though he never got to farm directly as he first wanted to after graduating from Guelph). Ken was smart enough to have become a professor, and he overcame personal obstacles to analyze huge amounts of research data about crop management alternatives. I don't know of any long-term research associate who has contributed more to science and to practical agriculture. He helped graduate students and professors (including myself) succeed in their programs. I thank God for the gift that Ken was (and is) to those he helped along life's journey.
