God decided that he had shared Eva long enough and that it was time for us to say goodbye. We are left with little choice when those we love are called home but we live on, move forward and do the best to accept what we cannot change. I am comforted knowing my sister left on her own terms without fear or regret surrounded by those she loved. Now that she is gone, I am left with memories of the moments that we were lucky enough to share. I understand that I have said goodbye to someone who was more than my sister, more than my friend and more than someone who brightened by day with her smile and love. When I was young, Eva was more like a mother to me, Mary and Steve. While our mother worked she cared for us, hollered at us when we needed to be hollered at (boy could she holler!) but she also hugged us when we needed to be hugged. She sacrificed her own interests and wants so that my mother could do what she had to do to support the family. Much like our mother, Eva's strength, love and dedication to family also showed through. She gave of her herself because it was in her nature to do so and I loved her for that. I remember with pride a woman who was resilient, whose strength and faith exemplified her life. I remember when she lost her husband but not faith in herself and her ability to be independent and I remember a woman who struggled with the loss of her leg, who overcame that loss and whose stubborn refusal to be helpless inspired us in the process. Thinking of my sister Eva I know that I haven't really said goodbye. Eva is in my heart, in a place where goodbyes simply don't exist and she is as close to me as ever. Towards the end, Eva said to me that she didn't have the words to say, the things she wanted. Few of us do. But, what I want her to know now is that her life, the way she lived it and the love she gave spoke louder than words.
Love Elsie
