I am so sorry to learn of Tony's death. He was a great help to me when I was researching my book on the history of the land that is now Fairview Farm at Dawn Mills. He had great stories of his early days living there in the sharecropper's house on the farm in the 1940s. These stories really brought that era of the farm's history to life.
One of my favourites was about the time he decided to take a short cut walking the two miles home from S.S.# Camden School on the north side of the Sydenham River.
"In the winter time, I used to come on the river because it was closer. I was half way between Holmes’ and home when all of a sudden I went through the ice. I got out, but I couldn’t find the fence because I was froze solid. So I hollered and finally got dad. He helped me across the fence, and then he thawed me out but good when I got across the fence. He spanked the hell right out of me. There was no more going on the ice."
