I worked for Bob right out of university at Fennell Lumber in Newbury. He was fantastic to work for and set the bar very high for all other future employers. He always treated all of us with the greatest respect and I appreciated that. He was patient teaching me the business and I will always have fond memories of my time there. My sincere condolences to the family.

My sympathy to all of the Fennell Girls. I will never forget your Dad skiing over a homemade ramp at Rondeau. It was about 1968 and also how he could barefoot ski before a lot of people knew how to do it. He took a few bad falls but always got up. He certainly did things his own way and loved the outdoors. My condolences to all.

There will be lots of great memories and stories about Bob. Both Eunice and Bob were huge figures in my formative years -- A big influence and treasured friends all these years.
Stories? I guess it would be cleaning the cement pond at the poultry farm in in the early 60s at the beginning of the summer. Right about now, in fact. And in later years, he was all set to teach me to hunt ducks.

It is likely been nearly 40 years since I last saw Bob Fennel. My parents, Dale and Ruth Muscutt, were in the Village Singers choir with both him and Eunice for several years. Growing up in Newbury, everyone knew Fennel Lumber, and many of those who knew Fennel Lumber knew of its good-natured, generous, and good-humored owner, Bob. I have thought of Bob many times over the years and I am thankful for all of those times that I have remembered him. As a little boy, Bob was a great role model and example to me. He always joked and laughed with me and made me feel like one of the grown up guys. My dad spoke, and continues to speak, very highly of him. Every time that I met Bob, whether it was at church, the ball diamond, in our grocery store, or at our home, he would challenge me to an arm wrestle. At mere 7 or 8 years old, I was amazed at how strong he was. He never let me win, but would always pretend that I was putting up a bit of a challenge for a few seconds and then he would instantaneously destroy me. He would laugh and rub my head and tell me how big my muscles were getting and that he would have to be careful, because one day I would get him. It seems to me that Bob was everything that a man should be to little boys in a culture that has no idea of how to influence them anymore. Bob knew how. He exhibited kindness, openness, encouragement, strength, resolve, and loving-kindness--all things that a man should be. I'm sure that he will be missed, but I'm thankful for the few brief times that he was able to influence me.

A lot of my childhood memories are of Bob. Every time I swing a hammer, I remember his voice in my head. "Don't take your eyes off the head of the nail. The hammer will find it." Every time there was a project at my parents home, Bob would be there, with tools, a smile and the energy of a 1000 Golden Retreivers. Whether it was 30 degrees on top of a roof, or negative 10 rabbit hunting, I always remember the grin, and a genuine, "Isn't this FUN?"
He loved what ever he was doing, and had an infectious energy. The day always felt better when Bob was in attendance.
Thank you for the lessons Bob. I heard Heaven appreciates a good builder.
I'm excited to see what you've done with the place by the time I get there.
Andrew Craig.

Our family's relationship with Bob and family goes back to when he would drop by after taking young Jane for a swim at Port Glasgow. He was always on the go, getting the job done, at work or play, with great determination. I worked for him at Fennell.Lumber where he was an excellent mentor. Bob had the brightest smile and the most infectious laugh. Up until a few years ago, he hunted with friends on our farm. He is a person that I think of often. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the Fennell family.
